ASSESSMENT

Assessment: Children and Youth

Each assessment is tailored to your unique situation and results in a comprehensive report, complete with analysis, diagnoses where appropriate, and recommendations for academic development, mental health/well being, and potential treatment options.

Early Childhood Autism Assessment (ages 3-5)

Our autism assessments for children aged 3 to 5 years are thoughtfully structured to be both thorough and child-friendly. These assessments can help families better understand their child’s strengths, challenges, and developmental needs. An early autism assessment can provide valuable insight into areas such as communication, social interaction, play, and behavior, helping caregivers and professionals support the child’s growth and wellbeing at home, in preschool, and beyond.

We use gold-standard, evidence-based tools and draw on current best practices throughout the assessment process. A typical autism assessment includes an initial parent or caregiver interview, in-office play-based and developmental testing sessions with your child, gathering information from caregivers and early childhood educators (if applicable), and a final feedback session to review the results of a detailed report. During this session, we discuss findings, any diagnoses that may apply, and recommendations for next steps and support.

Psychoeducational Assessment (ages 7+)

A psychoeducational assessment can be helpful for children and youth who are struggling with learning, attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and/or anxiety. This type of assessment helps to uncover your child’s strengths and challenges to better understand how best to support them be the best version of themselves at school, at home, and in the future. Typically this type of assessment includes an initial interview with parents/caregivers, 1 or 2 in-office cognitive and academic testing sessions with your child (4-5 hours total), gathering information from parents, teachers, and other professionals, and finishing with a final session to explain the results of the assessment, any diagnoses that have been identified, and recommendations for next steps and support.

Assessment: Adults

There are many reasons why an adult may seek an assessment. For example, maybe you can relate to some of the following:

  • You always wondered why school, or certain subjects, always seemed harder for you than for others.

  • You have been told by teachers or parents that you “have so much potential and just need to apply yourself”, but you could never seem to figure out how to actually do it.

  • You feel scattered, forgetful, and overwhelmed even though you have tried a million things (air tags on everything, multiple reminders, tried and abandoned day planners).

  • You can’t seem to do this ‘adulting’ thing (paying bills, cleaning, making appointments, and on and on).

  • It is hard to sit still, you are always on the go, and you feel restless when you have to stay seated or wait in lines.

  • You have a mind that JUST. WILL. NOT. STOP with all the random thoughts and distractions. You realize mid conversation that you haven’t heard a word the person has said.

  • Or maybe you are impulsive with your spending, say whatever comes to mind without thinking, or have trouble sticking to a plan/job/relationship/etc.

  • Or, maybe you can manage to do most of the above when you try really, really hard, but you are exhausted from all the effort.

A psychoeducational assessment may be able to provide answers to questions you’ve had all your life, or ones you are just starting to realize you have. An assessment can identify your strengths, areas of need, and whether you meet the criteria for ADHD, Specific Learning Disorder, or another disorder. It can also help you to secure the supports and accommodations needed to succeed in post-secondary studies, work, and personal life (including updating a previous diagnosis).
